Urdu Calendar-Pakistani Calendar
The Urdu Calendar (اردو کیلنڈر) is the calendar used in Pakistan. Because Pakistan is a Muslim country, the calendar for religious purposes such as religious festivals here is based on the Islamic calendar (اسلامی کیلنڈر). Pakistan, on the other hand, uses the Gregorian calendar or English calendar for civil reasons to keep up with the rest of the world.
The sighting of the moon in Pakistan is decided by the Ruet-e-Hilal Committee. The current Islamic year is 1443 Hijri, while the standard year is 2,022 according to the Gregorian date. Let us delve into more about the Urdu calendar. Let’s look at the intro of Islamic and Gregorian calendars to understand their value in an Urdu Calendar:
A Brief Intro To Islamic Calendar
The Islamic Calendar(اسلامی کیلنڈر) is based on the Hijri Year (ہجری سال), and it is a lunar calendar (based on astronomical calculation) with time-keeping related to the phases of the moon. Each new month has a full lunation, which is the period of time between one new moon (نیا چاند) and the next. This new lunar cycle (چاند کا چکر) includes all of the moon’s phases.
The Hijri Year began in 639 CE when the Prophet (PBUH) moved from Makkah (مکہ) to Madinah. Hijrah (مدینہ) is also known as Hejira (ہجرت) or Hijra, and it refers to migration (نقل مکانی) or emigration. The Prophet (PBUH) made the Hijrah because Muslims were being oppressed in Mecca and had been subjected to the Kuffar(s) of Makka’s horrors for a long time.
Hijra Era
Umar I, the Second Caliph (خلیفہ ثانی), established the Hijrah era (year of Hijrah). He declared the month of Muharram (محرم) as the first Islamic month in 639 CE, which is July 16, 622 according to the English calendar (انگریزی کیلنڈر) and established a new Islamic calendar. So, the Islamic month begins with Muharram (1st month) and the last month is Dhu al Hijjah (12th month).
A Brief Intro To Gregorian Calendar
The Gregorian calendar (گریگورین کیلنڈر) is the current calendar in use in the Western world, both as a citizen and as a Christian ecclesiastical calendar (عیسائی کلیسائی کیلنڈر). Pope Gregory XIII established this calendar in 1582. It was basically a modification of the Julian Calendar (جولین کیلنڈر).
The intercalation of a “leap day (چھلانگ کا دن)” every four years was meant to keep the calendar and seasons in sync. The calendar dates of the seasons regressed almost one day per century due to a minor measurement error.
Is The Urdu Calendar A Lunar Or Solar Calendar?
Well, here comes the confusing part, according to many folks. The Urdu calendar uses both types of calendar, i.e., the Lunar Calendar (قمری کیلنڑر) as well as the Solar Calendar (شمسی کیلنڈر).
The Urdu calendar uses the Gregorian calendar (گریگورین کیلنڈر) for official purposes and, side by side, uses the Hijri calendar (ہجری کیلنڈر) or Islamic calendar, to observe Islamic events. In the eighth century CE, Muslim scholars established the Tabular Islamic calendar (ٹیبلر اسلامی کیلنڈر) to make Islamic timekeeping more predictable and universal. To get in line with the previous month, the length of each new month is determined by arithmetic laws, and leap days are inserted on a regular basis.
