Natural Disasters In Georgia

Georgia is located in a seismically active area, which means it is an earthquake-prone area. The most recent large earthquake was a 6.2 magnitude earthquake that hit 104 kilometers southwest of Tbilisi in February 2022.

During the summer, lightning and wildfires pose a significant threat, particularly in Georgia’s mountainous regions. Also, two seasons are hazardous for debris flows and landslides: spring, when the snow melts and the rivers overflow as the temperature rises, and fall, when the rainy season begins. During these two periods, many rural settlements are dramatically affected by landslides and debris flows.
