Conjunctions are crucial for learners to master because grammar is the most crucial aspect of language for everyone.

We can construct complex sentences that communicate engaging and persuasive messages because conjunctions enable us to connect many words and even bigger thoughts and ideas.

This website provides learners with the Urdu meaning of conjunctions and conjunction rules so that they may start their learning process and work their way up to the highest grade.

Conjunction Meaning In Urdu

Before examining the four different conjunctions in Urdu, let’s first discuss what conjunction means in that language.

The meaning of conjunction in Urdu is “حرفِ عطف” and “وصل.” You can write them in romanized versions of Urdu as “Harf-e-Atf” and “Wasal.”

Now that you know the meaning of conjunction in Urdu let’s move on to its definition. “A conjunction is a term that joins sentences together. It can join together words, sentences, or even clauses.”

For example, Fatima and Bushra are friends.

In this sentence, Fatima and Bushra are two separate words, but the word “and” joins them.

فاطمہ اور بشریٔ دوست ہیں۔ (Fatima aur Bushra dost hain)

And in Urdu, “اور” (aur) is joining the two words.

Types Of Conjunctions In Urdu

In the Urdu language, there are four types of conjunctions (حرفِ عطف), just like in English. Here we will discuss them one by one.

Subordinate Conjunctions

Conjunction that joins a sentence with another sentence that is the original and the whole meaning of the first depends on it, such as:

  • She can’t pay bills because she is financially weak.
  • مالی طور پر کمزور ہونے کی وجہ سے وہ بل ادا نہیں کر سکتی۔

“Because” is a Subordinating Conjunction in this sentence because she can’t pay bills and does not understand the whole meaning of why she can’t pay bills. It is connected with the following sentence because she is financially weak. So she can’t pay bills.

Following are the example sentences;

The bold words like whenever in the first sentence and if in the second sentence are the subordinating Conjunctions.

Coordinate Conjunctions

Those conjunctions that connect grammatically similar Urdu words, phrases, or sentences that have whole meanings, and are not dependent on others, are called Coordinating Conjunctions. Such as:

Note. Bold words like “and, or and but’’ are subordinate Conjunctions.

Compound Conjunctions

Conjunctions with compound words, for example, words made up of a few letters together, such as:

In the first example so that, in the second and the third on the condition that; All of these are compound conjunctions because they are all combined with two or three words.

Note:

Some people do not define Compound Conjunctions separately but count them as subordinating conjunctions.

Correlative Conjunctions

Conjunctions are not used alone; Rather, they are used in pairs. That is why they are called Correlative Conjunctions because they are related. For example:

Either_or in these example sentences, whether_or in the second and not only_but in the third are all Correlative Conjunctions because they are all used in pairs.
