Slovenian language belongs to the South Slavik group of “Serbo Croatian.” If Slovenian is your second language, then you might already be aware of the basics of counting in this language. However, if it is a new language for you, then you might be memorizing each digit.

The numbers come in two types; cardinal and ordinal. In Slovenia, different words are used for both types of numbers; however, they have various similarities, making it easier to understand what each number refers to. Certain keywords are utilized for cardinal numbers and ordinal numbers, which turn the root word (number) into its other forms. Learning the basic numbers is the key to transforming these numbers into their other forms.

You should know all the numbers by heart if you want to learn how to use these. Furthermore, learning these will make it relatively easier for you to then use in countless other forms. So we will start from the cardinal numbers, and once giving you an idea about what those are, we will then take it up a notch and provide you with useful information about ordinal numbers.

Cardinal Numbers In Slovenian Numbers

The first ten cardinal numbers are “(one) èn, (two) dvá, (three) tríje, (four) štírje, (five) pét, (six) šést, (seven) sédem, (eight) ósem, (nine) devét, (ten) desét”. These cardinal numbers have certain masculine, neuter and feminine forms. These can also be referred to as the “basic numbers” which are significant to learn.

Some people write the numbers without their accent marks, e.g. (ten) deset, which is not accurate, and we would suggest you write its accurate form desét. However, if you run out of options and are communicating with a native speaker, then writing (ten) deset would not harm since they would understand.

Thousands In Slovenian Numbers

The numbers which fall in the range of 1000–9999 are marked with “tísoč” in them. This is added before a number to denote that it is a thousand. It is written like dvá tísoč (2000), etc.

The numbers, which are more than 1999, should have the digit-tísoč-number structure. For instance, dvá-tísoč-ena (2001).

Ordinal Numbers In Slovenian Numbers

In ordinal numbers, the organization of items on the basis of order or rank becomes easy. The ordinal numbers in Slovene depend upon the gender of the thing/individual to which we are referring. Generally adding “e, o, or i” to a number can make it the ordinal number.
